Plus-Size Women Hair Tips

What is the line about the crowning glory of a woman? For us, it is true. Brains and beautiful hair are possible no matter the size of the body. But the perceived size of the body is definitely affected by the shape and size of the hair! To balance these larger bodies, it is necessary to pay closer attention to face shape and body proportions in determining the right hairstyles. Studies show that while people notice you from the feet up, they remember you from the top down. If you want people to remember you fondly and remember you in proportion, remember your hair. Drama attracts the eye, so you have the opportunity to use your hair to make a bolder, more elegant, more chic, more whatever statement than your body.

Above all, your hairstyle should flatter you, be easy to care for, and reflect your personality and style - just like your clothes. Most plus-size women look better in hairstyles that add a little volume or height across the width of their head at the crown. Everything depends on your body/head/hair ratio, but generally you want to choose a hairstyle shape that is in harmony with, but does not exactly repeat the shape of your face or body.

Top five hair do's and don'ts for plus-size women:

Plus-Size Women Hair Tips

1. Do wear your hair above your shoulders. Wearing your hair longer than shoulder length creates a single mass silhouette with your head, neck and shoulders running into your body. The best lengths are about half inch above our shoulders or shorter, which adds neck length.

2. Do keep most of your hair off your face. Don't try that short pixie haircut with the hair brushed forward, toward, or onto your face and forehead. Although I see this recommended in a lot of hoe-to books, this look makes even a thin face look full and tends to squash all your features together. Whatever the style - long, short, medium - a fuller face will always be more enhanced by hair directed up, off and away. Generally, wearing it with a little height on top and directing it up and back away from the temples works well.

3. Do wear styles that frame the face without closing it in. Don't wear full bands that can square or close off a full face and make it look even more full. Wear your bangs wispy or brushed to one side.

4. Do take some chances with your hair and embrace change. No one should be sentenced to the same hairstyle for life! You, your hair, and the fashions of the times change constantly, so you will need to rethink your style and color periodically, too. As you get older your skin tone changes, and if you are coloring your hair you may need a slightly different shade. If you don't ask, the colorist may just stick to the color formula in your file.

Do take the time to style your hair on a daily basis. Sadly, people do judge a book by its cover, and as the odds may already be stacked against you for being larger in size, it is imperative that hair and makeup be perfect. Some people are born with great hair, but most are not. If color or body wave will enhance your skin tone or hair texture, do it! If your hair needs the aid of rollers or a curling iron, use them! If you are not adept at styling your hair or using tools to achieve the look you want, schedule one or more appointments with your hairdresser for styling instruction. Persevere until you get the hang of it.

How to Take Care of a Hair Weave Guide

Hair weaves can be remarkable accessories and one of the best parts is that the wearer just needs to tie their real hair back and then put on whichever weave they want and choose to get the hairstyle that they wish to have. It is popular because it is simple and quick to put on. In addition it takes no more than a few minutes and permits a person to get ready and look fabulous and great in the shortest amount of time possible. It is every woman's dream to have hairstyle that looks great and easy to achieve. However not many of us know how to take care of a hair weave. Let's go through it below.

How to Take Care of a Hair Weave

\"Great Hair\"

Anyone who does own a hair weave however needs to be aware of how to take care of a weave so that it will last them as long as it is possible. Especially if the hair weave that they own was expensive, of course it is going to be important to learn how to take care of a hair weave. It not only saves their money but also they still can use their favorite one for a long time, bear in mind it might not be possible to buy the same type again.

How to Take Care of a Hair Weave Guide

For the weaves that are put permanently into the hair, it is vital that the person to carry on and live as though the weave is just an extension of their actual hair. Stop holding it as if it's going to fall off.

The weave needs to receive just as much care and attention as the real hair, if not more. When it is done by a professional, the average hair weave will last about two months but can keep for a lot longer if it is being well taken care of.

If you want to learn how to take care of a hair weave one of the most important things a wearer needs to make sure of is that gentle products are used to clean the hair so that the weave will not be stripped. Please remember that it is also vital to use the right conditioner, one that is going to moisturize but without leaving the hair too oily.

When blow drying your hair be careful because it will dry out the weave, as well as the natural hair. If the extensions are burnt from receiving too much heat they will stay this way and there will really be no way to fix it besides removing the whole weave. This is not a good ideal idea not only because of the cost and effort of applying a weave but also because this is often pain involved and so this is not something that anyone is going to want to do on a regular basis.

Also on how to take care of a hair weave one needs to remember not to over process the hair, it doesn't matter if it curling, dying, or straightening it. All of them are damaging to real hair and even more so on a weave.

Hairstyles For Gray Hair Without Looking Old

You've decided that you're going gray and staying that way. And maybe you think that you should look at hairstyles for gray hair. After all, a 40+ year old woman should not choose a hairstyle that a 20 year old would have, right? No, wrong!

And just because we get older does that necessarily mean there are less hairstyle choices that would be appropriate for a 40+ woman? No,of course not! You just don't want to get carried away by wearing pig tails or side pony tails for instance.

\"Great Hair\"

Your age has very little to do with a hair style that would be right for you. In fact, there are lots of hairstyles that are classics and if you think about it, you've seen them yourself. Think Meryl Streep in "The Devil Wears Prada" and what about the infamous Peggy Lee with her "platinum" hair?

Hairstyles For Gray Hair Without Looking Old

Think about other classic hairstyles worn by the famous. Princess Diana's short full cut or Barbara Streisand's chic, long bob. How about those not so famous, striking, sexy gray haired women that you know. They have a few things in common. They have done their homework and found a style that was flattering for their face, not their age. So, like any big decision that you make:

1. If you don't have a good hair stylist, you need to find one. No,not one who specializes in hairstyles for gray hair - just a good stylist. Be bold and ask a stranger; "who does your hair?" Who wouldn't want to hear such a flattering question? And you get some good guidance. Win, Win!

2. On your first visit to the stylist don't get shampooed right away. Discuss options while your hair is dry so that the stylist can see your hair in its natural state.

3. Be receptive to new ideas when talking with your hairstylist. A good stylist can give you sound advice on what might work best for you.

4. Bring along a few pictures of hairstyles that you like. It can help the hairstylist create something flattering that you will like.

5. Be realistic with what the stylist has to work with. For instance, if you have lines and creases on your forehead, you may want to detract from them with feathered bangs or bangs swept to the side. Maybe you have crow's feet. Conceal them softly fringed sides that frame your face.

6. Flatter your new hairstyle by amping up your make up, standing up straight and make sure that you have a white, bright smile.

So, go for it! Forget about looking for hairstyles for gray hair. Your age has nothing to do with choosing a new hairstyle. Choose something that's right for you.

The Price of Beauty: Hair Straightening Costs

With an onslaught of shampoo commercials on TV, featuring models with long, smooth and super straight tresses, it is no wonder that a big chunk of the women population want their hair to look impeccibly perfect. As a result, hair salons offering hair-straightening services continue to mushroom all over. Do-it-yourself hair treatments, hair ironing kits, and other various hair products are constantly being upgraded, with new and improved.

To say that there's a great variety of hair-straightening methods and products to choose from is an understatement. Women find themselves in a dilemma on what would suit them, and bring out the best results. Among their major concerns is cost. When it comes to hair treatment, does price really matter? Will a more expensive process generate better results, or do cheaper ones suffice?

\"Great Hair\"

Factors to consider:

The Price of Beauty: Hair Straightening Costs

1. Hair Condition

Needless to say, more work translates to higher costs. The curlier the hair, the more expensive the salon treatment or hair product will be.

2. Treatment life span

One has to choose whether she wants her hair to be straight permanently or for a certain period only. While some women prefer to have hair a la Cher for their entire life, others love experimenting with various hairstyles - frizzy one day, super straight the next. A permanent treatment's rate will of course be higher than a temporary one.

3. Maintenance

When one constantly takes good care of her hair, especially after undergoing a hair-straightening treatment, there will be less frequent salon visits necessary.

$$$$$: Chemically straightened treatment done by professionals in a salon

While there are hair straightening formulas readily available in the market, it is still recommended to leave the chemicals to the experts. The reason is simple: dealing with strong chemicals requires technical know-how of the entire hair straightening process. Also, professionals will be able to evaluate one's hair condition to find out how strong the chemicals will be used, to avoid any damage.

$$$$: Hair ironing kit

While this hair tool is, of course, cheaper than a salon visit, it does not guarantee lasting results. Hair irons come in various types. Those using metal plates are usually the cheapest, but it is not recommended for regular use because its surface will cause hair damage in the long run. The ceramide hair iron is considered gentler and effective, but it comes with a higher price tag. Using ceramic plates, this kind of iron is smoother, which will result in better flattening of hair. It also has a better control in temperature, that will prevent burning and permanent hair damage. In buying a hair iron, make sure to test it before buying. Thoroughly read and follow the instructions included in the kit. When you regularly iron your hair, avoid using other chemical treatments, such as coloring dyes, because it might result in hair damage. It is also recommended to have a regular trim to prevent split ends from occurring.

$$$: Hair dryer

Amazingly, despite the emergence of newer hair straightening products, the good old hair dryer is still surviving, and in fact, still widely used. Perhaps among the cheapest of hair straightening products, the hair dryer still remains to be reliable in temporarily managing frizzy hair. Like the hair iron its results last only until the next wash. Before starting, make sure the hair is free of tangles by using a wide toothed comb. It should also be slightly moist. Use a large and round brush for better results. Setting lotion, gel or leave-on conditioner may also be applied after blowing the hair to eliminate frizz and achieve a smoother, silkier appearance.

What Type of Woman Does a Man Want to Marry?

Most women have probably wondered at one point if they were good 'marriage material' or not. Although not all women want to get married, many of them dream of their wedding day from the time they are little girls. As grown women, it can still be a dream that we look forward to. However, at times you can really start to wonder what type of woman a man wants to marry! Sure, all men are different but most men want a few of the same characteristics in their women. Here is some information on what type of woman men want to marry!

Laid Back - Most men prefer a laid-back woman as opposed to a high strung, nagging woman. Sure, you will have your disagreements, but nagging can really drive a man crazy. He doesn't want to marry his mother after all! If he does, run away quickly! Men prefer a woman who can laugh at herself, sit back on the couch and enjoy television with him and just have a good time. Of course, he expects that you will be serious at one point or another but being dramatic or serious all the time will drive him bananas quickly!

\"Great Hair\"

Speak Your Mind - Although men do like laid-back women, most men also prefer a woman who speaks her mind over a woman who does everything to please her man. Being sweet and doing things for a man is great but you need to have your own personality as well. Don't be afraid to speak up and let the world know how you feel because when you have found the right kind of man, he will support you no matter what! Men really love a woman who is both intelligent and challenging.

What Type of Woman Does a Man Want to Marry?

Looks Are Important - This does not mean that you need to look like a supermodel or Jessica Beal, but men want women who take care of themselves. No matter what your body type is or your eye color, just make sure you take care of yourself. Splurge occasionally on a great hair cut and clothing. Keep your mani and pedi appointments and of course keep yourself clean and hygienic. A splash of seductive and alluring perfume never hurt either!

Caring and Kind - Yes, these virtues are important. As men eventually consider children and marriage, they want to be sure that their children's mother is loving and understanding, caring and kind. They also want to be sure that they can introduce you to the family and be proud of who you are. Can you pass the 'meeting Mom' test? This is very important to a man and if you have these characteristics, you get big bonus points!

When you find the right man, he will love you no matter what, but in the meantime, the above characteristics are what most men look for and seek in a wife. If you fall in these categories, watch out - you might have a ring on your finger before you know it!

What Does Hair Lotion Do?

There is a large range of hair lotion products available on the market and they each treat different problems, catering to different peoples requirements. Some forms help increase the circulation in the scalp and this enables healthier hair to grow quickly, plus it is stronger. It is recommended to choose one that you can use on a daily basis and you do not have to rinse out the product.

Many women and men have dry, unmanageable hair which needs plenty of moisture added to it. Applying this product can help to calm hair, smooth it out and detangle.

\"Great Hair\"

This is particularly useful when you have young children because they are unable to manage their own hair and require, us, adults to maintain and care for it. Children are often very impatient and start crying easily if you have to pull a comb through tangled hair. The lotion reduces this for them, therefore detangling becomes much easier.

What Does Hair Lotion Do?

Furthermore, there are specialist lotions for various hair textures and you need to make sure that you purchase the correct one for either your hair or for your child. For instance, those with Afro Caribbean hair required a different type of product than those with a finer hair texture because the former is able to absorb a lot more cream than the latter.

In addition to the above, if you are starting to lose some of your hair there are different forms of lotion that can help to prevent or slow down this process. The reason behind your hair loss, such as hereditary or due to natural aging, does not matter any of these products should work for you.

When searching for the correct product for you, try to choose one with no alcohol in or a minimal amount of alcohol. The reason behind this is that a high alcohol content can cause the hair to dry up even more, there are many types of lotion that are natural. As well as using a cream, you should consider adopting a hair treatment plan that includes natural oils, conditioning shampoos and other products.

Before purchasing hair lotion you need to be certain of what you need it for and set a budget in advance of what you are happy to spend. It is always best to check the ingredients on the bottle and if you are unsure of what anything is, check it out online.

The Secret of Good Hair Care

The secret to a good hair care is to know what your hair wants and needs, like know your hair texture (dry, normal or oily). Another thing to keep in mind is about the right kind of products suited to your hair. There are loads of products calling for your attention; but choose the one that suits you the best.

In today's world, one hardly has time to go to a beauty parlor and sit there for hours to get soft, shiny, smooth hair. By following simple rules, you too can have great hair right at your home.

\"Great Hair\"

These rules are:

The Secret of Good Hair Care

Avoid over-washing your hair. Short hair is easier to wash daily but not long hair. Over washing will dry the hair and make them brittle. Don't apply shampoo directly to the roots. Start from the nape and then work it through the rest of your hair. Distribute conditioner evenly through your hair. Use a comb to spread the conditioner evenly through your hair. Avoid twisting of wet hair. It may be convenient, but try to avoid wrapping your hair in a towel and leaving it twisted up on your head for long. It can damage your hair.

Avoid using hair dryer everyday. Allow your hair to dry naturally whenever possible. Deep conditioning treatment: Once a week give your hair a deep conditioning treatment. For this home deep conditioning treatment all you need is an egg and 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise. Wet hair and gently massage beaten egg through it. Leave on for 3 minutes then wash off with warm water. Massage in mayonnaise and wrap a hot towel around your head for 30 minutes. Shampoo off with warm water. You won't need a conditioner and will be a proud owner of shiny, soft, conditioned hair.

Another weekly conditioning hair pack can be made using henna and egg. Mix henna with egg and leave it over night in an iron vessel. Apply this paste in the morning on clean hair and leave it for half an hour for natural conditioning before washing with your usual shampoo. Do not comb your hair when wet. This may cause to hair breakage as it become very weak during this time.

A good hair massage before washing your hair can do wonders. Massage in warm olive oil or coconut oil and leave for 30-40 minutes before washing. Regular massage with castor oil as a hair oil helps the luxuriant growth of the hair.

Do not wash your hair with very hot water. Always use lukewarm water. Regular use of coconut milk on your scalp would make your hair silky and also improves hair growth.

These are some tips to get healthy and beautiful hair. Remember to follow your routine regularly to get good results. If changing your product, stick to the new one for a month or two to see the results. Natural products are harmless and cheaper too.

How Does Weather Affect the Skin?

Weather has a major role in affecting the skin. Since our skin acts as a barrier for us, protecting everything internal, it is actually in the direct path of fire of all Mother Nature's elements.

No matter what the weather is like, we know that the sun is usually a problem. The effects with the sun are extremely damaging to our skin. It is actually known that too much sun without appropriate protection from UV light can cause skin cancer. Unfortunately, we shouldn't hide from the sun either. Sunshine in small quantities is extremely essential to our bodies to create Vitamin D that is definitely important for healthy growth. The best way for you to get some sunshine is to protect your skin by continually using sunscreen.

\"Great Hair\"

Acne issues are more common during the summer due to increased heat as well as humidity, which cause the skin to sweat. This, in turn, could cause blocked pores, leaving you at risk of break outs. You will need to clean the skin twice a day, morning and night. Always apply proper cleansers and moisturizers meant for your skin type. An additional common skin difficulty is heat rash, which happens when sweat glands become clogged, trapping moisture under your skin. The best thing that can be done is to cool down the skin and keep from sweating.

How Does Weather Affect the Skin?

Wind as well as cold weather can be extremely rough on skin. When it is cold, there isn't any moisture in the air; add in wind, and it blows away any moisture left on the skin. Lips need extra care in the cold along with dry months because they don't trap and hold in moisture as well, leaving them more liable to dryness and cracking. You have to try not to lick your lips, because that makes it worse. We lick our lips giving them moisture, but as that evaporates they tend to dry up even more. It is crucial to constantly be moisturizing your whole body head to toe when it is windy and cold.

Choosing a Hairstyle to Fit Your Face & Personality

Choosing a hairstyle that is right for you isn't as easy as it sounds. First you need to select a haircut that fits your face, and then you need to find a hair color that will work well with your natural coloring. In addition to taking into consideration your face shape and skin coloring you also need to think about what hairstyles will reflect your personality and spirit.

When you are selecting a haircut you need to take into consideration what shape your face is. People who have oval faces are very lucky, as this shape offers you the most options. Basically anything will look good on you because your face is already balanced. If you have a round face then you will need to look for haircuts that add height to your face. You do not want to select a cut that will add additional bulk to the center of your face, nor do you want to select a cut that will shorten your face. If you have a long narrow face then you will want to select a cut that will add a little fullness to the center of your face. Shorter cuts will probably be your best option, as longer cuts will exaggerate your features even more.

\"Great Hair\"

After you have selected a great hair cut you will next need to select a hair color that will accomplish two things. First it should compliment your natural skin tones. Be careful not to select a shade that is either too light or too dark. Next you will want decide whether you want a natural color or a creative shade. This selection should be based on the type of look you are going for, as well as what color will best reflect your personality and your sense of style.

Can Low Iron Make Your Hair Fall Out?

Women's hair loss is unique in that unlike loss in men (which is most commonly genetic), it can be caused by a number of things including medical issues, hormonal changes, or scalp / and sebum issues (which can be very similar to male loss.)  It's very common and understandable to first look at things that are unique to women, like hormones and menstruation.  One thing that can go hand in hand with menstruation is a lessening of iron when you menstruate.  So, a common question becomes "is there a link between low iron and women's hair loss?" or  "is my low ferritin level causing my shedding?"  I'll answer this question to the best of my ability in the following article.

Iron, Ferritin Levels, And How This Can Effect Your Hair:  First up, I have to tell you that I am not a doctor, but I have spent years researching women's hair loss as the result of my own experience.  I can tell you that some experts do believe that low ferritin levels and hair loss can go hand in hand. In fact, if you go to a dermatologist for your hair loss, you'll often be tested for iron levels (as well as hormones) as a first step.  But, many doctors are only alarmed by a level that is well below normal ranges because our levels can change dramatically during the month.

\"Great Hair\"

And, in my experience, only women with extremely low ferritin levels have success with stopping their loss by bringing up their iron.  And, you really only see levels this low in vegetarians, women with endometriosis or abnormal menstrual bleeding, or people with medical issues that are causing severe anemia. I did convince my doctor to work with me in raising my levels (which had always been low, even when I had great hair.)  I managed to significantly raise them into normal and even high range, but unfortunately, my hair did not improve - not then, anyway.

Can Low Iron Make Your Hair Fall Out?

Raising Your Levels:  With that said, it can't hurt to raise your levels if you are concerned about them.  The best way to do this is through foods.  Using iron supplements without a doctor's supervision is dangerous and ill advisable.  It can be just as harmful to get too much iron than not enough and your body will often have a hard time absorbing it this way (that's why you're often advised to take juice, but even this isn't as effective as many would like.)

A western diet is usually quite sufficient, but if your diet is not protein rich, or if you're a heavy bleeder when you menstruate, consuming "iron rich foods" is more safe and effective than taking supplements without doctor supervision.  Examples are red meat, egg yolks, dark leafy green vegetables like spinach and collards, prunes or raisins, and cereals that have been fortified.

Things Which Can Indicate That The Hair Loss Might Not Be Related To Iron: Again, I'm not a doctor, but if you're seeing other symptoms along with your shedding or loss like your hair strands becoming thinner, the texture of your hair changing (a cotton candy or spider web type texture - often called miniaturization), excess oil on your face or hair, scalp issues or pain, patterned loss, an increase in sweating or a different smell to your sweat (which would indicate increased androgens,) these are all issues that point to something else.

What You Can Do In The Meantime: No matter which route you chose to take, there are some things that you can do to support your hair's condition.  The key to stopping women's hair loss is really three fold. First, you must stop whatever is the trigger of the loss.  Sometimes, this is never found. Sometimes, you happen upon this by dumb luck and by trying different things. Sometimes, it is a time game.

Second, you must diminish the inflammation which can either be the cause of your loss or at the very least a by product of it.  Finally, you must support healthy regrowth.  Many women (myself included) will find that the regrowth comes in as thin strands with a weird texture.  It's important that you nourish and unclog your follicles as they are trying to reprogram to produce healthy hair once again.  It does no good to stop the loss only to regrow poor quality hair. This is often an external rather than internal process that focuses on your scalp rather than on what you are doing internally.

Can Low Iron Make Your Hair Fall Out?

How do I know all of this? Because I lived it. In my quest to end my hair loss, I looked at my iron, my thyroid, my adrenals, my hormones, and my scalp in my quest to fix my hair loss. You weren't born perfect - nobody is. But you can do something to make your life a lot better than what is experienced by the average individual. The people who are the happiest with their lives are those who can learn to love themselves just the way they are.

Here are some suggestions on how to place yourself up on that pedestal and laugh at negative energy.

\"Great Hair\"

Pay Yourself A Compliment

Self-Esteem Booster: Ten Ways To Love Yourself

Give yourself a compliment at least once a day. It could be something like "I really liked the way I handled that situation," or "I love how my hair falls softly onto my face today". The compliment can be deep or superficial. Whatever it is, it should help keep your mood up, even if only slightly. Highlight the positive aspect of every situation you encounter. If you practice this often, you're on your way to liking yourself a whole lot better.

Make Yourself Over

Grab your closest friend and get all dolled up. Put on your best attire, dab on a little make-up and get your hair done (not necessarily by a professional), then grab a camera and snap fun and funny photos of each other. Once you've had the photos printed, discard those that make you look drab and keep only the shots were you looked your best. Whenever you feel down, you can just go look at these pictures to remind yourself that you are good-looking and that your life is fun.

Get Physically Fit

You don't need to achieve a supermodel-like physique. Simple daily exercises to boost your bloodstream every morning will do. You will feel better, your mood will be more positive, and the more congenial you will be with other people. If you give out positive energy, the more beautiful you become - and the more people will be inclined to return positive vibes to you, too.

Change Your Body Image

If there's something in your body that you dislike, find out what's causing you to smirk at it. Chances are, the reasons are very shallow and superficial. The realization of this will help you attain a better self-image and teach you to appreciate yourself more.

Treat Yourself

Set aside time once a week to do something just for you. It could be anything from watching a cheesy movie to walking your dog in the park. As long as it's time for you in doing what you want to do.

Wear Nice Underwear

This sounds silly, but it works! Wearing really cute knickers does make you feel better and a lot more confident about facing others. Don't believe this? Try it!

List Your Good Points

Without looking at the mirror, make a list of all the things you appreciate and like about your body - things like, "I have great hair" or "I have a nice set of teeth". Keep this list in your wallet or wherever you can see them and whenever you feel terrible, just take out this list and read it to yourself.

Ask a few of your best pals to spend a day out of town with you. Pack a delicious snack and spend the day fishing or hiking, or whatever suits your interests. A day in the fresh air is sure to give you an energy boost and make you feel good about yourself.

Get Away From People Who Put You Down

You know these kinds of people. They simply can't stand the fact that you're okay with your life and will always try to dampen your mood. Avoid them at all cost, because they'll never make you feel good about yourself.

Do A Good Deed

Do something good for someone else. You will find that things like volunteering at a homeless shelter or even a simple thing like helping somebody who is lost by giving proper directions will make you feel good for the rest of the day. You will be doing something worthwhile and when you see how badly off some people are, you will start to appreciate your life more and be grateful for what you have.

Hair Falling Out With a Little White Bulb at the End

A small white bulb at the end of a fallen hair is not, in itself reason for concern. It only indicates that the follicle has passed through the various phases of the growth cycle before the strand was shed. Although this is a normal process (even in the absence of any type of hair loss disorder), the white bulb is not usually noticed until, or unless shedding becomes excessive--prompting one to examine their fallen strands.

If a disorder is suspected, an examination of the bulb can provide professionals with clues as to the type and cause of the disorder. The shape, size and color will determine which stage of the growth cycle the hair was in prior to falling out; and if any abnormalities are present.

\"Great Hair\"

The first phase of the cycle, the period of active growth, is called anagen. During this time the hair is firmly anchored, deeply within the follicle. Removing an anagen hair from a healthy scalp would require a firm, forcible pluck. The tip would reveal a small rounded or slightly elongated, pigmented bulb that may be surrounded by a gelatinous sac-like enclosure.

Hair Falling Out With a Little White Bulb at the End

After each individual hair has reached its full growth potential, the follicle moves into what is known as "catagen". Although catagen lasts only one to two weeks, many changes take place during this time that prepare for the formation of the white bulb. The lower follicle shrinks. The inner root sheath disappears. Pigmentation ceases. Cellular material (such as that of the outer root sheath) that is no longer needed to sustain growth, begins to migrate to base of the strand.

Once all catagen changes have occurred the follicle enters what is known as "telogen." In early telogen any remaining cells that are no longer needed migrate to the base of hair. Because pigmentation has ceased, these cells will be non-pigmented. These non-pigmented cells cluster together to form the "mysterious white bulb that acts as an anchor to hold the hair in the follicle while it "rests" for approximately three months before being released. The telogen phase is also referred to as the resting period.

Any hair that falls out with a white bulb attached indicates that it has cycled through the telogen phase before falling out. Because of the shape, these strands are also referred to as club hairs. This feature will be present in normal daily shedding. Unless shedding is excessive there is no reason for concern.

The most common condition that causes excessive shedding with a white bulb attached is telogen effluvium. Because any follicle at any stage of the growth cycle can be affected, fallen strands may be of various lengths.

With alopecia areata the hair is often shed during the telogen phase, but in some cases it can be shed during anagen or it can break off. The affected strands may have an "exclamation mark appearance." A small portion of the strand right at the scalp level becomes very thin giving the appearance of an exclamation point. Because the hair is very thin at this point it can also break off. Although the most common form of alopecia areata causes bald patches, there are other variations of this condition that cause other, more severe patterns of baldness.

The absence of a visible white bulb could indicate that the hair fell out during the anagen stage, such as in loose anagen syndrome or anagen effluvium. It could also indicate that it broke off rather than fell out.

The size, shape, color and condition of the bulb can provide valuable diagnosis information to the examining hair loss professional.

If you neglect your hair for long, it might turn brittle with split-ends and also cause dandruff. You may even experience untimely hair loss if you don't take timely precautions.

Studies indicate that in 95 percent cases, hair loss is genetic, but many other factors such as diet, general health, vitamin and hormonal deficiencies, overuse of hair dye, physical and emotional stress also lead to uncontrolled hair loss. However, it is possible to control most of these factors that lead to untimely hair fall among individuals.

\"Great Hair\"

Though hair loss is not a life-threatening situation, but it may imply internal health problems. Besides, it may also spoil the level of self-confidence in the long run. As there is no permanent cure for hair loss, but it is possible to take some preventive measures to ensure healthy and shining hair. Some of these tips are listed below:

10 Proven Tips on How to Reduce Hair Loss

1) Role of Diet

A nutritious diet, which contains all essential vitamins and minerals, helps in minimizing the hair loss. Therefore, you must include green, leafy vegetables, raw oats, and whole grain cereals, eggs, dates, and raisins in your daily food regime. As the hair is made of protein, you are advised to stick to protein-rich diet, such as calves liver, brewer's yeast, and wheat germ. These foods also contain Vitamin B, which is an important nutrient for hair. Outer coverings of potatoes, cucumbers, and green and red peppers are high in silica, which is essential to maintain the beauty and strength of your hair. Vitamin E also promotes hair growth and reduces hair fall. A person may experience hair fall due to thyroid dysfunction also. Therefore, you must include foods, which are good sources of vitamin A and iodine.

2) Washing routine

Your hair cleansing routine largely depends on your hair-type. People having oily hair may need to wash their hair regularly, while people having dry hair can wash it twice a week. Never use too hot or too cold water to wash your hair. While cleaning or massaging your hair, you should always use your fingertips and not your nails to gently clean your scalp.

3) Proper combing

You should use a wide-tooth comb to untangle your hair and comb in downward direction. Using a wooden or tortoise shell comb is a better idea than using a rubber comb. Avoid combing wet hair, as wet hair can easily break.

4) Drying your hair

If possible, allow your hair to dry naturally. Avoid using blow dryer as its heat can damage your hair, and also make it look coarse and lifeless.

5) Using proper conditioner

Protect your hair from sudden environmental changes, while going out to a beach or a pool. You must use an effective conditioner as it protects your hair from the sun, chlorine, and sea water. You should also wear a protective hat or a cap to avoid overexposing your hair to the sun, salt or chlorinated water and pollution.

6) Use of shampoo and conditioner

Always choose a simple formula shampoo, which costs you less money. Remember, the basic purpose of a shampoo is to wash away the dirt and the oil. Therefore, use a milder shampoo, which is less expensive and more beneficial for your hair. Apply a good quality conditioner once you clean your hair with the shampoo, but do not over-condition your hair.

7) Choose a comfortable hair style

Choose a hair style that truly reflects your style and taste while significantly enhances your personality. Often traditional hair styling products are rich of alcohol and other harsh chemicals, which may again harm your hair.

8) Knowing your sleeping pattern helps control hair loss

Comb your hair gently while going to bed. You should also gently remove all bands or clips used during the day. Do you know that your sleeping pattern also affects the life and health of your hair? People who are restless even while they are sleeping may actually end up breaking their hair. So, if you belong to the restless community of sleepers, you should use s satin pillowcase, which allows your hair to move smoothly and thus cause less breakage.

9) Limit the use of alcohol and smoking products

Reduce alcohol consumption and also avoid using it on your hair. Avoid using hair care products that contain alcohol. This is because alcohol can make your hair look dry, brittle and prone to breakage.

10) Avoid using harsh chemicals

Certain harsh chemicals such as permanent hair color and perms can also affect the health and growth of your hair. Therefore, you must avoid coloring your hair more than once every 2-4 months.

How to Reduce Crows Feet Lines Around the Eyes

The aging process makes it inevitable that we develop lines and creases around the eyes, known as crow's feet. Treatments for reducing crows feet include anti wrinkle creams, botox injections, laser skin resurfacing treatments and cosmetic acupuncture.

Diet and Lifestyle

\"Great Hair\"

The ageing process makes it inevitable that we develop lines and creases around the eyes, known as crows feet. The type of skin you have and environmental factors can make a difference in the severity of crows feet. As is usual with most health issues, prevention is better than cure. Avoiding exposure to the sun, using a good sun screen all year round and wearing a wide brimmed hat on sunny days will help prevent damage from the sun. A healthy diet rich in anti oxidants will help to strengthen the skin against damage from the sun and pollution. Smoking is known to give you wrinkles and can also damage your eyesight. Even if you do not smoke yourself, frequent exposure to others smoking can be just as damaging.

How to Reduce Crows Feet Lines Around the Eyes

There are several treatments to consider for reducing crows feet around the eyes:

Anti Wrinkle Eye Creams

A huge range of products are available from beauty stores which claim to reduce wrinkles. It is difficult to know if these actually work, as any changes will be very subtle. There are some face creams which can relax the skin and prevent lines forming. The only way to know if anti wrinkle creams work would be to apply the cream to one side of the face for several weeks and then check the mirror to look for changes. Individuals may experience a different result due to the type of skin and strength of muscles which contract and cause lines to form in the first place.

Botox Injections

After botox treatment injections, you should see significant improvements within 7 days. Botox causes the muscles to relax, and prevents them from contracting, so that the face remains smooth and wrinkle free. Botox is excellent for reducing crows feet lines around the eyes, removing frown or glabella lines and forehead lines. Too much botox can create a face which does not move and is unable to show facial expressions. Some people may develop an immunity to botox, especially if they have frequent botox injections. Botox is popular with celebrities and is available at many local beauty salons.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatments

Laser skin resurfacing can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles by removing the outer layer of skin. Several treatments may be required to achieve the desired result. The skin may be very red and sore for several days after treatment, and exposure to sunlight must be avoided as the new skin revealed by laser treatment can be easily damaged by UV rays. Laser skin rejuvenation is a popular treatment for acne scars and uneven pigmentation. Some laser treatments can tighten the skin as the laser encourages the stimulation of collagen production, which plumps up and firms the skin.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

The principal behind acupuncture is that it redirects natural energy in the body, promoting healing and well being. The insertion of needles into the skin can also stimulate collagen and therefore acupuncture can achieve a face lift, reducing wrinkles and firming the skin. Facial rejuvenation with acupuncture should only be carried out by a qualified acupuncturist who has had specialist training in cosmetic acupuncture.

Top 10 Hair Dying Mistakes

Whether you want to want to get rid of that gray hair or you just want to have a new look, dying is a good way to achieve it. Unfortunately, hair dying entails consequences that may damage and dry your hair when used inappropriately. The selected color of your dye should blend with the original color of your hair and eyebrows and to enhance your features. Experimenting is good, but dyes can be rough on your hair when used frequently. Although it is best to dye at a professional salon or stylist, it is much cheaper at home with the same creative effect. Before you see the top 10 hair dying mistakes, it is important to have an understanding of the different types of hair dye that are available so you can put them in context.

Types of Hair Dye

\"Great Hair\"

1. Permanent hair dye

Top 10 Hair Dying Mistakes

While dying your hair permanantly is, by some, considered in and of itself a mistake, the obvious benefit is that it lasts for a considerable time. As the hair grows, it is applied to the roots. It contains ammonia and peroxides, which can possibly cause dryness and damage. Exposure to the sun and salt water will cause the color to fade. That's why in order to maintain the color, it is best to cover your hair by using a hat or bandanna when going outside.

2. Long-lasting Semi-permanent

As the name implies, has the longest life remaining even after more than 20 washes, depending on the brand.

3. Semi-permanent

These have the shortest lifespan for dyes. After 6-12 washes, the color will start to fade. This is recommended for first-time users and those who want to experiment with colors.

How to dye your hair safely and professionally:

- Separate hair into two quadrants. Then clip each part.

- Wear plastic gloves while mixing dye solution. Follow the directions written on the box.

- Squeeze a small amount of coloring into one quadrant. Streak thin stripes of color over the whole area of the quadrant. Put a clip on the colored part.

- Repeat the process after you have completed coloring the four quadrants.

- Consult instructions on how long you should leave it. Add a couple of minutes of wait to that of the suggested treatment time.

- Put on left over color mix to the entire head after a few minutes.

- Rinse with cold water.

Top 10 hair dying mistakes!

- Number 10: Applying dye to dirty, tangled hair

Deep condition your hair a month before dying to maintain color. Be sure your hair is relatively clean before applying. Trim hair especially dry and split ends to even out color. Hair should be slightly damp when dye is applied.

- Number 9: Using hair conditioner before you dye

Do not condition your hair a few hours before applying hair dye, shampooing will do the trick. Your hair needs to be free of free radicals such as dirt and oil as much as possible.

- Number 8: Choosing hair dye based on what the model on the box looks like

Consult the local salon or stylist on what colors would look best on you. The hair dye you choose should have the same tone as your skin color.

- Number 7: Forgetting to check for allergic contents

After choosing a brand, apply a tiny amount of hair dye near your neck or behind your ear to see if irritation, redness, inflammation, allergy, hair loss or any bad reactions occur. Wash the affected area right away if this happens. Remember the instructions carefully. Do the patch test 1-2 days before hair dye application.

- Number 6: Doing your entire head without testing a small amount of your hair first

Do a strand test by applying a bit of dye to a few stands of your hair to see if you got the right color.

- Number 5: Staining your skin or clothes

Protect your skin by wrapping a towel around your neck as the dye can irritate your skin or affect your clothes. Gloves should be used and must be included in a hair dye kit. Applying petroleum jelly or cream around your ears and neck part will keep off stains. Wipe off oil after shampooing. If you do happen to stain your skin, don't worry, rubbing alcohol will remove dye stains from your skin

- Number 4: Picking a color that does not fit with your natural hair color

Pick a color one shade lighter when dying your roots. This will make the transition from your colored hair back to your natural hair color graceful without roots that are a completely different color sticking out. Obviously, this rule does not apply if you are dying your hair a completely different color than your natural hair color.

- Number 3: Losing hair

After dying, always rinse with cold or tepid water to avoid your own hair from falling out.

- Number 2: Over-dying hair

If you did not achieve the desired effect, using Liquid Tide can correct this. A couple of days of use will lighten the color until your hair returns to the original color. Instead of over-dying, do touch-ups every four to five weeks to keep your hair color picture perfect.

- Number 1: Dying eyebrows and eyelashes

Never use hair dye on eyebrows and eyelashes! Ask for medical help when dye gets into your eye.

Hair Straightener Irons - How to Keep Your Hair Straight Longer

Hair straightening is a process of straightening your hair by using certain chemicals along with heat applications. However, people who opt for hair straightening, are often doubtful about the effectiveness of the process. They also want to know for how long this technique will last on their hair. Majority of people want to keep their hair straight for a long time after undergoing the hair straightening process. People use a hair iron or a flat iron to straighten their curly or wavy hair.

To meet the challenge of keeping their hair straight, many people use anti-frizz spray, before they blow dry their hair. They believe that it really helps in keeping the hair straight. If you want to give an extra bounce to your straightened hair, you can use this spray once the hair straightening process is over. Besides, you can also use a number of shampoos available in the market to wash your hair. These shampoos should be used before you blow dry your hair.

\"Great Hair\"

To keep your hair straight for a longer duration, you should keep the following points in mind:

Hair Straightener Irons - How to Keep Your Hair Straight Longer

  • Never get a hair straightening done in a hurry. Remember, the hair straightening is a time-consuming process, and needs to be done in a relaxed manner. Straighten a small section of hair at a time, as this will really be effective at a later stage.
  • You must use a good quality hair iron as old hair irons may not give you adequate results, and thus the straightening may not last for a long time.
  • If possible, avoid hair straightening during unfavorable weather conditions such as rain, winds or humidity. It will help you to maintain your style for a longer period. Adverse weather conditions are bad for your hair and you will find it difficult to maintain your style.
  • Do not shampoo your hair frequently.
  • Avoid excessive heat applications on your hair to prevent damage.
  • Dry your hair by using soft towel, or by using hair dryer. Otherwise, you must blow dry your hair before going for hair straightening. Wet hair is very delicate and may also break easily.
  • After hair straightening is done, you must apply hair spray to keep the hair straight for a long time.
  • Once the hair straightening is done by using hair iron, you can apply straightening serum or a heat protecting spray. This will help you keep your hair straight anywhere between two to four days. After washing your hair, you may need to repeat the same process.
  • You must not brush your hair too regularly, as this would make your hair greasy.
  • Buy the shampoos and conditioner meant for getting straight hair.
  • While drying wet hair, avoid drying it upwards as this adds to excess volume.
  • Avoid tying your hair for a loner duration, as this would create a twist, which would destroy the straight look.

The steps mentioned above may help you to keep your hair straight for a longer time. But, you should always use products, which are safe for your hair, and protect you from the heat generated by the hair straightener iron.

The Cost of Hair Extensions

Hair extensions can be added to your own natural hair to add length, volume, and body. They can also be an easy, non-chemical way to add highlights or lowlights. Hair extensions can be a one-night change or one that lasts six months.

How much do hair extensions cost? The price can vary widely, depending on type of hair and method used. Synthetic hair costs much less than human hair. Raw or virgin (untreated) human hair costs more than other types of human hair. For now, though, we will focus on hair extension prices for different methods.

\"Great Hair\"

The Cost of Hair Extensions

Clip-on hair extensions are a temporary solution, and their price reflects that. Hair Replacement Centers offer clip-ons from .50 to 9 for a kit.

Hot Fusion or Bonding

In this method, extensions are hot glued to your natural hair. This is the traditional method, and it costs around 0.

Cold Fusion

This is a new technology that is meant to be gentle on the hair. It costs from ,500 to ,500.

In this method, hair extensions are braided into the natural hair. This method costs around ,200.

There are salons that offer hair extension prices much less than these listed. Before buying discount hair extensions, however, make sure that the hairdresser is qualified. He or she should be a licensed cosmetologist with experience in applying hair extensions. Many hair extension companies offer certifications in hair extension application. Find out if your hairdresser is certified. Do not choose a hairdresser based solely on price -- the cost to your hair could be too great.

What are Fusion Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions can be attached to your head in many different ways, including gluing, tubing, sewing, and clipping on. Different methods have different advantages. The method you choose will depend on many factors: your hair, your lifestyle, your budget, and your needs, for starters. If you are looking for a long-lasting, natural-looking hair extension, though, consider one of the fusion methods.

Fusion is generally the preferred method as fused hair extensions can last up to three to six months with skilled application and proper care. With fusion hair extensions, the extensions should be indistinguishable from your natural hair. If properly applied, the attachment site should be virtually invisible.

\"Great Hair\"

Fusion hair extensions can be applied in different ways: hot or cold fusion. Hot fusion or bonding uses hot glue to attach extensions to your hair. This is the more traditional method. While it does have many happy followers, others say that the glue causes the extensions to feel stiff and unnatural. These extensions can last up to 4 months.

What are Fusion Hair Extensions?

Cold fusion is a new method, and is meant to be gentle for the hair. This method uses a keratin-based polymer to attach extensions to the root. As this method uses no heat, it is good for fine or thin hair. The polymer offers more flexibility than hot-glue, and results in more natural-feeling hair. For cold fusion hair extensions, many hairdressers use SoCap extensions and a clear bond. These extensions can last up to six months.

Fusion hair extensions are more expensive than other methods. If you want long-lasting, natural-looking luscious hair, they just might be the extensions for you.

Shag Past and Present - History of This Great Hair Style

The shag hairstyle is a youthful cut where you have short and layered hair. Mostly hair is layered at the crown of the head rather than below. As an option you could add bangs to the cut which you should be able to push off your face. The look should allow you to tuck hair behind your ears and keep them in place with barrettes. Today's shag could be a variation with more layers towards the bottom of the cut or longer length.

In recent years, the most outstanding and noticed shag hairstyle was Meg Ryan's in IQ. The flirty short shaggy bobs were a variation which really motivated a number of us youngsters waiting at our stylists with her picture, queuing up for a similar look. Though it may look real neat and trendy, you need a stylist with 'shear magic and eye for styling' to get you the right look. He should know exactly where to layer your hair depending in your face and features; where to thin out thick hair and give volume to thin hair. A shag hairstyle is the most versatile haircut giving you the option to style it in two to three different ways! You could add bangs on one side, both sides, keep it long or short, keep it messy, styled or carefree and the best is you can manage them at home without the need to buy every styling product in the market.

\"Great Hair\"

Paul McGregor had invented the Shag hairstyle and gave it to Jane Fonda in the movie Klute . Farrah Fawcett wore it in the famous Charlie's angels television show and it became a phenomenon of sorts. Shag is the classic hairstyle of the '70s and considered one of the 'coolest' as it was worn by the heart throbs of that time. David Bowie, Rod Stewart, everybody who was anybody had the shag hairstyle. During the '80s, adaptations of the shag hairstyle were worn by the heavy metal rock bands who wore their hair in long shag cuts. The shag hair style was the ultimate unisex style and women and men were both wearing it with élan.

Shag Past and Present - History of This Great Hair Style

Another theory suggests that in the 1960's men had begun wearing their hair long after the hairstyle Process brought in the 1920s by the African Americans. In the 1970s when hairstyles were changing and the process style was fading, men were habituated to wearingh their hair long. So, in the 80s, they let their hair grow at the back of the head while keeping them shorter at the top. This was the first form of the shag hairstyle worn by men which was soon adapted into various styles.

The 70s was an era of the youth, the end of the Vietnam War added in making it the turning point for them. Platform shoes, disco dancing and the Beegees; this new found youth was perhaps the reason for the emergence of this carefree, youthful and messy hairstyle- the Shag hairstyle.

Easy DIY Updos For Everyday Style

An updo is simply arranging the hair in a bun or a pony tail instead of letting it hang freely around the face.  These days updos are no longer the formal stiff looking buns and knots that women used to fashion during proms, weddings or other formal occasion.  Instead modern updos are more soft, sexy and feminine.  Modern updos can now be done quickly and can be worn during any occasion, making an easy DIY updo accessible to any woman.

For the modern woman an updo is not just a fashion statement, it is a must.  Mothers and career women feel that they can move around more freely when not constricted by long hair.  The updo is not just for straight haired women, they are also for the curly haired.  Doing your hair does not have to necessarily mean an expensive trip to the hair salon or the stylists'.  It can be done cheaply and in a short time right in your own home.

\"Great Hair\"

For the most basic updo, you can just tie your hair in a pony tail and be done with it.  Another way to do a basic updo is to gather your hair in one hand and raise it behind your neck.  Pull your hair into a twist and secure the twisted hair with hair pins or those specially designed hair-claws.  Let the ends hang freely.  To add more style, pull some hair out from the side of your face and let them frame your face.  By allowing some wisps of your hair to fall freely, your updo is softer and more feminine.  You don't have to worry about your hair being messy despite the clips and hair pins.  Most celebrities wear their updos in this messy style.  This casual hairstyle can be worn not only at home or at work but can be worn during any event.

Easy DIY Updos For Everyday Style

For my personal updo, which I wear everyday at home and when I go out.  I wash my hair and apply conditioner.  I towel dry my hair and if I don't need to go out I don't use blow dryers instead opting to have my hair dry naturally.  When my hair is finally dry I put on some leave on conditioner or hair gloss.  Since I have black hair these products will make my hair shinier.  I put on a head band to keep the hair out of my eyes.  I usually choose those elastic kinds with colorful patterns.  After I secure my head band, I gather the rest of my hair at the back of my neck and depending on my mood I usually secure my hair low, just at my nape, or when I am going out for a night in town with my friends or have to go to a business meeting I secure it in a pony tail high on my head.  My hair is shoulder length so instead of finishing the pony tail, and pulling the hair out all the way out the scrunchie, I let a small bun form and arrange the hair I have pulled out to cover the bun and scrunchie.  This style is casual and messy but it can be worn to formal occasions too.

The updo is a very versatile hairstyle, so you can personalize it to suit your needs, mood or the event you have to attend.  You can try accessorizing your updo with barrettes, hair clips or bobby pins.  You can also try curling those loose tendrils with a curling iron if you have straight hair to add variety and style to your updo.  A casual messy updo is the best look for any occasion. It is easy and fun to do.  This look is easy on the budget too.

10 Definite Don'ts of Great Hair Care

If the amount of money consumers spend on hair care products annually is any indication, most people are concerned about the appearance of their hair and strive to attain beautiful, healthy and stylish locks. In fact, most will go to any lengths to achieve their desired look. From professional salon treatments to over-the-counter serums, hair care is a big business.

The only problem is that while many people are buying the correct products for their hair, they forget to follow basic care regimens that will guarantee the health and beauty of their tresses. Additionally, many are also causing needless damage to their hair by participating in unhealthy hair care behavior.

\"Great Hair\"

So, what should you do to make sure that your locks stay healthy, shiny and strong? To avoid all disasters, follow these 10 absolute don'ts of great hair care.

10 Definite Don'ts of Great Hair Care

Hair care don'ts

1. Avoid unprofessional and over-the-counter products whenever you can. Many of these only offer false hopes and promises.

2. Do not cut your own bangs. Leave all of your cutting needs, even bangs, to the professionals.

3. Avoid excessive sun, chlorine and salt water during the summer months. Excessive exposure can cause severe damage that is irreversible even if you use the best products.

4. Do not use clarifying hair products on your tresses more than one time per week. They can strip hair of moisture and essential oils.

5. Do not visit a salon without first getting a referral from someone you can trust. Choosing a salon based on an advertisement or sale alone is very risky.

6. Do not purchase hair color that comes in a box.

7. Never stick with an outdated look because you are afraid of looking different. Styles change for a reason. Ask your hair care professional to bring you into this decade with a new style.

8. Do not straighten your hair with a clothes iron. C'mon, this was so over in the 70s. We have straightening irons that won't damage your hair for this now. Look in the hair care isle.

9. Don't brush your hair or put too much tension on it while it is still wet. This will cause breakage. Also, do not wear tight styles such as corn rows for extended periods of time unless you have ethnic hair.

10. Never use sun-lightening products such as lemon juice or over-the-counter products designed to lighten hair with the sun unless you want a very short hair cut in the future.

In the end, caring for your hair is a very individualized and personal thing. Feel free to add your own flair and style to your routine, but remember to include hair care principles that will benefit your hair and avoid those that damage it.

The Difference Between a Good Hair Stylist and a Great Hair Stylist

Women have a great advantage in the hairstyle department in that most anything goes. We can change our whole look in a matter of hours with a new hairstyle or new color or highlights. A fresh, new cut and color can give us a tremendous lift with renewed self-confidence. It can also be a horrible disappointment if we don't get what we expected or if what we expected doesn't work well with our features or hair type. This is why it is essential to have an experienced, skilled hair stylist who will be completely honest.

Not every hair style looks good on every face shape. A short, curly style on a round face will make it look rounder. A long, straight cut on a thin face will make it look even narrower. A good hair stylist will know the cut that will be the most flattering to highlight your best features and downplay those features you're less happy with. A great stylist will talk you out of a style you really love in the magazine picture but will be unflattering in reality or will never work well with your hair type.

\"Great Hair\"

Contrary to advertising, not everyone can be a gorgeous blonde or fabulous redhead. In fact, as pretty as a color may be, the wrong color for your complexion can be ghastly. A good hair stylist will know the most flattering hair color for your complexion and the highlights that will make your skin glow. A great colorist will tell you the truth and won't let you make a big mistake.

Want Great Hair? Pro Hairstylist's Tips You Can Use at Home Part 5 (of 7) - Color

Hair Coloring Rule #1:

Never subject your hair to more than two chemical processes.

\"Great Hair\"

If you've straightened or permed your hair, chose either a single process color or highlights but not both. Multiple processes are just too damaging and you're likely to end up with wiry fried hair or no hair at all if you just keep layering the chemicals on.

Women with relaxed hair, and those who use high heat appliances to straighten hair daily, should use only cream-based permanent dyes, which have more conditioners than gels or liquids.

Hair Coloring Rule #2:

Relate your color to your skin tone.

Skin that has yellow undertones may look jaundiced next to hair that's too pale; deeper hues, on the other hand, can impart a beautiful golden cast.

Rich browns won't do any favors for reddish skin; a dark color attracts attention almost like a bull's-eye around red areas. Lighten up with caramel or tawny brown highlights.

Hair Coloring Rule #3:

Stick close to your childhood color.

When in doubt, take a look at your old family albums. Stay fairly close to the color you had when you were young -- it will usually be the most flattering and easy to maintain.

Hair Coloring Rule #4:

Make changes slowly.

If you plan to reclaim a towheaded youth, don't rush in. Even at the salon, your hair will lighten only so much at one time -- push it too far and it turns orangey. Do a little every month, so you can control the brassiness.

If you're going from faded out or gray color back to a darker shade, a gradual process, applying a slightly darker shade each month, will allow you to find the tone you're most comfortable with. You'll probably get a better response from friends and family too if you don't shock them but introduce the new younger looking you slowly.

Hair Coloring Rule #5:

Remember Your Brows

Never match your brows to a new haircolor, but consider making them a touch lighter or warmer. It can make the whole eye area look younger and softer. Because the eye area is sensitive, never dye your own brows or lashes. Have a licensed professional apply color while you're in the salon for your brow waxing or a hair cut.

Hair Coloring Rule #6:

Root Maintenance is not an option.

Even for Sara Jessica Parker fans', retouching your roots is one of the golden rules of haircare -- but only use the bare minimum.

If you want to keep your hair healthy, just do the roots, Coloring your entire head each and every time you color may alter your overall color and damage older, longer hair. That's how people end up with bleached ends.

If your color needs a recharge, ask your stylist for an all-over gloss or glaze. There are also at-home treatments that will do the trick. You leave it in for 10 minutes, you wash it out, and you've got shine no matter what your texture is, Just be sure to use restraint-- don't use it every week, just once a month.
